Pictures from Prague!

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

We've figured out these durned Czech computers and uploaded a few pictures from our trip so far. Here's a link to our Flickr set:

Honeymoon in Europe

Check back every couple of days for more pics!

Here's a hint: You can always check the thumbnails on the right-hand side of this page for the latest five shots we've uploaded. (Scroll down a little bit if you can't already see it.)

Brad, Brad, he's our man.
If he can't figure out durned Czech computers, no one can!

Nice snaps!

The architecture is absolutely AMAZING, but what the heck is IMG_0855?!? And don't tell me IMG_0867 is a moving piece of machinery, let alone a clock! Those cemetary shots are SO cool.

I'm going. I never knew how beautiful Prague was. Thanks for that!

Hey buddy...they charge by the minute here. Kroners don't grow on trees, you know.

IMG_0867 is a piece of machinery. It's the Prague Orloj, or Prague Astronomical Clock. We just got back from watching the chimes ring! Hoards of people gather to watch the show every hour on the hour from 8AM to sunset. It's almost 600 years old!

Okay, I feel totally weird making requests of the travelers, but I'm gonna chalk it up to the instant feedback of the net.

Can you score a short video or stagger a couple shots of the Praque Orloj so I can see the movement? I imagine the parts move slowly, so maybe two shots five minutes apart? Are you nearby enough to do that?

Oh, and if you could capture the chimes ringing in a picture, I'd be really impressed... :-)

Sorry, Burt. We've already left Prague, so you'll have to come out and see for yourself! Until then, I'll try to describe the chimes for you.

The chiming starts with a bell ringing to mark the hour. Then the figures on either side of the upper dial are animated. They do gestures such as nodding their heads or ringing pulling the rope to ring the bell. The green doors with the crosses on them (above the upper dial) then open and a parade of saints move by the open windows.

It's a cool thing to see, but the whole thing only lasts a few seconds. It reminds Beth of Disneyland, a little more hype than substance, but still cool to check out.

Oh, and as for how the clock works, I haven't a clue. I watched it for 15 minutes and didn't get the first idea about how to actually read it.
